Asunto: [Socios] PhD POSITION: Seed Regeneration in Human-Dominated Landscapes
Dear colleagues,
We are seeking a PhD candidate to investigate plant regeneration from seeds in anthropogenic and invaded habitats. The position is funded by the SeedAnthropic project (Spanish Ministry of Science, 2025–2029) and will be co-supervised by Eduardo Fernández Pascual<https://portalinvestigacion.uniovi.es/investigadores/218880/detalle> and Adrián Lázaro Lobo<https://portalinvestigacion.uniovi.es/investigadores/1010343/detalle> at the University of Oviedo (Asturias, Spain).
As human‑altered environments become increasingly widespread, they can host notable biodiversity but also face serious challenges such as degradation, biological invasions, and the loss of native species. Understanding how plants regenerate under these conditions is essential to restore these landscapes and enhance their resilience.
The PhD project will examine how seed traits shape plant communities in disturbed and invaded habitats, identifying mechanisms that allow native species to persist alongside human activity and resist invasive plants.
The research will combine global data synthesis, fieldwork, and local experimentation. Globally, the candidate will conduct a meta‑analysis on the seed regeneration niche of plants adapted to human‑modified environments. Regionally, the work will focus on the Cantabrian Mixed Forests ecoregion in northern Spain, testing native seed mixes designed for ecological restoration.
Contract details
The successful candidate will sign a predoctoral contract with the University of Oviedo, with a gross salary of €18,700 per year. The candidate will be affiliated with the Botany Area of the University of Oviedo and the Biodiversity Research Institute (IMIB<https://imib.csic.es/>). The main workplace will be in Oviedo. Funding for the position is secured for 36 months starting in June.
Applications
Prospective candidates are invited to send a short CV and a brief expression of interest to fernandezpeduardo en uniovi.es<mailto:fernandezpeduardo en uniovi.es> and lazaroadrian en uniovi.es<mailto:lazaroadrian en uniovi.es> before 28 February 2026.
To be eligible, candidates must hold an MSc degree in Biology or a related field. Selection criteria will prioritize applicants with:
* Experience working with plants in both field and laboratory settings.
* Skills in data management and statistical analysis in R, fluency in English, and strong communication abilities.
* Participation in publications and research projects related to plant ecology.
* Driving license and skill are mandatory.
Kind regards,
Eduardo Fernández Pascual
