Subject: PhD opportunity in plant molecular biology

Dear Koen, Mario and Nico,

I contact you as there is in my group (at SCK CEN), a PhD opportunity within the field of plant molecular biology.

It will be mentored by Gustavo Duarte and Jordi Vives i Batlle, in collaboration with Prof. Sophie Hendrix (Hasselt University). I would be very grateful if you could share this opportunity within your network.

The project aims to connect early molecular responses in plants to population-level outcomes under ionising radiation (chronic vs acute exposure) and co-stressors (e.g. metals, drought), and to translate these into models that support risk-based, cost-effective remediation of contaminated sites.

The link with more details and the application form is Building a quantitative AOP framework for smart remediation of NORM and legacy sites | SCK CEN<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.sckcen.be/en/thesis-and-internship-topics/building-quantitative-aop-framework-smart-remediation-norm-and-legacy-sites-5683__;!!D9dNQwwGXtA!QJDZ4RVlKIX6cEyh9I-zVmQ4bw1g5qceDg9vQyFkzUuq0M-e0n7vFKdBG_8-yUHXX1vHD-3ObpFID9_LM8kvY4c2VXI$> and is also provided at the end of this message; the position is also advertised on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7415380966376222720/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7415380966376222720/__;!!D9dNQwwGXtA!QJDZ4RVlKIX6cEyh9I-zVmQ4bw1g5qceDg9vQyFkzUuq0M-e0n7vFKdBG_8-yUHXX1vHD-3ObpFID9_LM8kvvOj1BMQ$>. Interested candidates are welcome to contact us for further details.

Thanking you in advance

Nele

Project title
Molecular Signals to Management Decisions: Building a Quantitative AOP Framework for Smart Remediation of NORM and Legacy Sites

Key objectives / activities

  * Use rice (Oryza sativa) as a model to map acute vs chronic responses to ionising radiation.
  * Identify and validate condition-specific biomarkers (DNA damage/repair, oxidative stress, small RNAs, epigenetics/TEs, physiology).
  * Integrate markers into quantitative AOPs (qAOPs) and a lean population model to produce assessment-ready metrics.
  * Test mixtures (IR × metal ± drought) to understand additivity vs interaction and simulate real-world scenarios.

Candidate profile

  * MSc in Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, (Eco)Toxicology, Environmental Sciences or a related field.
  * Hands-on experience in plant (molecular) biology; experience with omics/data analysis is a plus (training will be provided).
  * Strong interest in learning modelling approaches (training provided).
  *   Curious, collaborative, and well-organised.

We offer

  * A fully funded PhD position.
  * An interdisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art labs and access to extensive datasets.
  * Opportunities to publish and present internationally.
  * A project with clear real-world impact on environmental risk assessment and remediation of NORM and legacy sites.

Practical information

  * Location: SCK CEN, Mol, Belgium
  *   Application deadline: 31 March 2026
  *   Planned start date: 1 October 2026
