Hello all,

Apologies for the mass posting – we have a PhD project available that it’d be great if you might circulate to potentially interested folk – and other colleagues. Many thanks, Al.

Scaling emergent mycoforestry technology from lab to field production

All major food production categories in the UK emit greenhouse gases in their production, contributing to anthropogenically driven climate change. In stark contrast, the emerging technology of mycoforestry shows great promise to produce carbon negative food. In mycoforestry systems, the root system of tree planting stock is inoculated with edible ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) to establish commercial tree plantations that produce a dual crop of trees and edible mushrooms.

The mushroom crop provides an earlier return on investment than a tree crop alone and might help reduce risk under increasing unpredictability of financial returns from plantation forestry associated with climate change. Trials of mycoforestry have begun with some early success stories. Research is now needed to take this approach from the lab and into the field, to develop a fully scalable and productive system.

This project sets out to assess the field-based performance of mycoforestry trials and further develop the technology for greater plantation success. It will capitalise on existing trials of mycoforestry trees in Scotland and Northern England and involve a mix of field, laboratory and computer-based analyses. The project will be run in collaboration between the University of Stirling and Mycorrhizal Systems Ltd (MSL), a global leader in EMF activities. The successful applicant would undertake training and internship with the local MSL team at their new laboratory and trial production facility on the Isle of Bute, Scotland.

The project will be structured around the following objectives:

  * To evaluate success of recently established mycoforestry sites in the UK.
  * To characterise associated communities of microorganisms at these trial sites using DNA sequencing and bioinformatics.
  * To develop new fungal isolates from the field including strain selection and growth optimisation.
  * To conduct inoculation trials to develop new strains and co-innoculants and explore their benefit for future mycoforestry approaches.
