Title: Topology of Multi-species Localization
Abstract: Quantifying spatial interactions in multi-species spatial
biology datasets is crucial for understanding the underlying biology,
for example in multicellular spatial data arising from tumor tissue
samples. Existing approaches to quantify such interactions from spatial
statistics, network science, and topological data analysis (TDA) are
largely restricted to studying pairwise interactions between individual
species. Higher-order spatial interactions are captured through their
induced pairwise interactions, which can lead to an incomplete picture
of the biological context. The present work addresses this limitation,
using recent advances in TDA to develop a new framework that quantifies
higher-order spatial interactions involving multiple species directly,
and validates such framework on synthetic and empirical spatial biology
datasets.
